APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

There are five elements that support your application:

  • Application Fee
  • Statement of Purpose
  • GRE General Test
  • TOEFL
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Transcripts

We look for evidence of strength in all of these. Other factors, such as research experience or publications, may be taken into consideration but they will not replace any of the above requirements. We do not offer a "conditional" admission for applicants who need remedial work at the undergraduate level. Such work should be completed before applying to our program.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE

To apply for the M.S. degree applicants should have a B.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent, with a grade point average (GPA) that is the equivalent of not less than 3.0/4.0 of undergraduate study.

To apply for the Ph.D. degree applicants should meet the requirements for the M.S., and possess an M.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent, with a GPA of not less than 3.25/4.0.

Transcripts not based on 4.0 system will be evaluated by UCLA for minimum requirements. Meeting the above minimum requirements does not guarantee admission; the actual standard for admission is set by the current pool of applicants, and is generally much higher.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The On-line Application allows you to include your statement of purpose. This statement should be precise and brief. Your statement is a means of helping us match your academic and research interests with those of our faculty (this is very important if you are applying for financial support). It should not be a personal life history; it should contain only such personal details as will aid the Admissions Committee in evaluating your application. Describe exactly what you wish to study at UCLA. "Materials Science and Engineering", for example is not specific enough. State what branch of Materials Science and Engineering interests you, e.g., ceramics , electronic materials, Structural Materials, etc. For more information regarding specific fields of study in Materials Science and Engineering, see: Graduate Research Areas

BACK TO REQUIREMENTS

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

At least three letters of recommendation should be submitted. Letters should be typed on the recommender's letterhead and attached to the recommendation form that you will able to print during the On-line Application Process. The recommender can either forward the letter directly to our office themselves or return it to you so that you can forward it to our office. To insure confidentiality, please ask each recommender to seal the envelope and sign his or her name across the seal before returning it to you. The recommenders should state your full name, their full name and title, and their opinion of your ability to do graduate level research at UCLA.

For the M.S. program: we recommend that you provide letters of reference from professors who have taught you in your junior and senior years.

For the Ph.D. program: we urge that all your letters be from academic references as recent as possible; if you have an M.S., letters from professors who have served on your M.S. committee are particularly helpful. If you cannot obtain academic references, the letters should be from people who can comment on your recent professional attainments and your qualifications for graduate study in Materials Science and Engineering at UCLA.
