Research Interests
Research interests include materials science, solid state physics, mechanical engineering and history of technology.
Current Research: The fatigue strength, fracture mechanics, and mechanical properties of vapor deposited carbon used for components of implanted mechanical heart valves. (Fortunately, we find this carbon material almost insensitive to stress cycling.) The atomic modeling of Vegard's Law. Failure analysis. Use of lenses in antiquity.
Recent Research: The creep resistance and ultra-plasticity of carbon fiber and creep of carbon-carbon composites. Characterization of rocket nozzle materials. The biaxial strength of advanced ceramics. Micro-mechanical theories of the strength of ceramics. Delayed fracture of ceramics.
Earlier Research: Fatigue tests of metals under combined stress and development of the generalized criteria for fatigue strength. Interaction of atomic defects in anisotropic media. The growth of filamentary crystals and their properties.
